Let's Call It a Doomsday
By Katie Henry
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Dec 31st 2019.
Let's Call It a Doomsday by Katie HenrySince we are destroying the earth, it is reasonable to prepare for the end of life as we know it. But when one girl acts on this, she is labelled as mentally ill. The heroine and narrator of this YA novel is Ellis Kimball. She is a high school junior living with her parents in San Francisco. She is extremely smart but she also worries a great deal, especially about the future of the world. She goes to a therapist to work on her anxiety issues, but she is not ready to accept that she is the one with the problem. She is convinced that the world is heading towards apocalypse, but she is not sure

Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent, and Navigating the New Masculinity
By Peggy Orenstein
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Dec 31st 2019.
Peggy Orenstein wrote Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape in 2016. Her new book, Boys & Sex: Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent, and Navigating the New Masculinity, is similar in its approach. She interviews many young men mainly in their late teens and early twenties, some experts and pundits, and she cites a fair amount of scholarly research. She combines her results into a very readable social analysis of the sexual lives of young men in the USA. Nearly all of her work up to now has been about girls and young women, with a little about pa

The Rest of the Story
By Sarah Dessen
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Nov 19th 2019.
The Rest of the Story by Sarah DessenIt is 10 years since I last read a Sarah Dessen book, and it is good to find that she is still a powerful story teller. This is her 14th title in the YA market, and it is satisfying. As with any such work, the plot involves personal struggle, growth, romance, and drama. Our heroine is 17 and she has already gone through a lot. She has two first names, Emma Saylor. Her father calls her Emma but her mother would call her Saylor. Her mother was an addict and her parents divorced when Emma was young. After the divorce Emma stayed with her father while her mother's life became a series of stays in

Love & Other Curses
By Michael Thomas Ford
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Apr 23rd 2019.
Love & Other Curses is a YA novel about gender, sexuality and gender fluidity in small town America. Sam is 16 and gay. His family has no problem with that, and he doesn't have any trouble at school either. His mother died some time ago and Sam's main connection with her is through notes she left in 21 of her vinyl albums of her favorite artists, with assessments of the music. He has memorized them all. There are some good albums on the list. It's summertime and Sam is preoccupied by his family curse -- those who fall in love before they are 17 will die. So far he hasn't been at risk

My Book about Brains, Change and Dementia
What is Dementia and What Does it Do?
By Lynda Moore
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Nov 20th 2018.
This little illustrated book for very young children helps them understand why people with dementia appear strange or behave on odd ways. It says their brains are not working properly, and that causes problems. It also emphasizes that it is not the fault of the person with dementia, whatever they do, but it is ok for children to have any feelings in reaction to what the person with dementia does. There are a couple of pages that raise the issue of death, and these are carefully flagged so they can be skipped if the child is not ready for them. This book could be useful for families with a memb
