This is a mystery novel with entertainment being its primary purpose. Psychological, pharmaceutical, judicial and law enforcement issues and practices are explored from the point of view of a tortured, but witty, and reasonably well adjusted protagonist. The author seems knowledgeable regarding all of the legal issues and settings which makes the story more interesting by giving what seems to be an insider perspective into the legal system, while making said insight accessible enough to be received as light entertainment.

Fans of mystery will enjoy this novel. The protagonist appeals as an “every man” character even though he is faced with tragic circumstances and has a specialized profession. The language suggests detailed knowledge of the court system as well as psychological and medical knowledge. The characters and voice of the novel give it an educated but down to earth feel. This makes it appealing to a variety of readers. While it is not required to read the first book in the series, having done so provides the reader with more insight into the character.

This is an enjoyable series. The protagonist is clever and easy to relate to, despite having a darker past and facing more adversity than the typical reader. As with the first book, the twist is surprising, but easy to see in retrospect. Even though I could figure out who and how, the question of why was not clear until the end. There were also some questions that seemed to simply be red herons. It was a fun and clever read and was able to portray dark content without being too disturbing. There are only a couple characters that are actually fleshed out and interesting—the main character being one–but it works for the story and I was happy to be able to review the next book in the series, and will continue reviewing this series if given the chance.
