This little book for young children
should please all cat lovers.  Ellie’s cat Tuffy brings in a couple of
dead birds to the horror of his family, but when he brings in a dead rabbit
that used to belong to the next-door neighbors, they get really angry.  Ellie’s
father threatens him with the words, "Woe betide you, Tuffy, if there’s
anything dead lying on the doormat beside you."  Tuffy is wonderfully
unrepentant, explaining that it is just his nature to do what cats do.  The
Diary of a Killer Cat
is funny, and while it makes no excuses for cats’
tendencies to kill other small animals, it also shows that cats can be wrongly
accused.  The amusing illustrations by Steve Cox fit perfectly with the text.
