White Rage will interest you in attaining a greater truth regarding racism and the impact whiteness has had on the history of the U.S.A. while illustrating how daunting the Black experience of whiteness is within the system known as white supremacy which pivots us against one another. There are 289 pages including 82 pages of footnotes, a short section of recommended reading and questions for discussion.
White Rage speaks to the current-day crisis in cross-cultural relations and the ways in which the Reconstruction while promising was stripped from the very beginning to suit the will of white’s who had no intention of accepting the freedom of slaves nor giving them the autonomy and opportunities white people had. With a keen awareness into racism, Anderson dissects many a perversion of white psychology and white rage combined which is evidenced by the laws white’s create at will to demoralize, humiliate, defame and oppress Blacks. How? By continuing to separate families, imprison Blacks for congregating before and after sundown, suppressing voting rights, denying fair-housing, employment, education and health care: In essence the problems in our democratic system today have been problematic since the Reconstruction and the underlying cause of the pathological violence of white’s toward Blacks has not sufficiently been addressed to disassemble it as we see again and again in 2017!
One would think a white person could not get up in the morning without an excuse for their rage against Blacks being taken into consideration on a job, in the paper, on the internet, in their church; while waiting to get unemployment or buying groceries in a supermarket. White rage is excused, expected and a comfort-zone which is imbedded in the complicity of whites’ against racial and social justice. Somehow or other we [I am white} are all made to feel sorry for white people, as if white privilege while an asset has not really served us sufficiently and Blacks are still lurking around the bend to take something from us. Well, White Rage will quell those misgivings and more, much more!
In White Rage you will see the times are tragically reminiscent of the turn of the century. You will learn that while Blacks make up only 13 percent of the nation’s population, 45 percent are incarcerated and according to the Human Rights Watch, “the proportion of blacks in prison populations exceeds the proportion among state residents in every single state.” White Rage is a must read for anyone interested in racism and the power of whiteness over all of our lives.
